Inside March Madness: Virginia Tech's Current Resume

March Madness is a great time of year for me. The excitement of Selection Sunday, filling out roughly 20 brackets and watching every game which I never thought I would ever care about.

Getting into the field of 65 is a very tough feat, one that Virginia Tech hasn't been able to do for some time. The basketball season is about halfway done now and I think this would be a good time to examine Virginia Tech's March Madness resume.

Let's check out some key statistics:
RPI: 65
SOS: 222
Record: 16-3 (3-2)

Now, Virginia Tech's RPI is pretty solid but their strength of schedule is really weak. Their record as of now is very good, and it actually surprises me that Virginia Tech isn't really being discussed for the tourny at this point.

Virginia Tech has about five good wins at this point in the season. These wins are:
1) Georgia at home
2) Seton Hall at a neutral site
3) At Miami
4) Boston College at home
5) At UVA

Virginia Tech doesn't really have any bad losses to speak of. Temple is a top 25 team and is very good and definitely a tournament team. North Carolina is iffy at this point, and if they continue to skid they could be considered a bad loss. The loss at Florida State isn't awful due to Florida State being a solid ACC team.

Right now, I would say Virginia Tech deserves to get in. They still need a couple quality wins yet, but they have a lot of chances still to go. UNC at home and Clemson at home are the first two to pop up. If Virginia Tech could get one of those two wins, it would be a huge boost of confidence. If the Hokies could steal a win either at Duke or at Georgia Tech and lose about two to three more games, I would say that Tech deserves to get into the field.

Who knows though? There is a lot of time left in the season, not to consider the ACC Tournament after the regular-season is finished. Virginia Tech should have what it takes, and since March Madness is one of my favorite times of year and Virginia Tech is my favorite team, this would be a match made in heaven.
